Lot Details
Al Vandenberg (American, 1932-2012) Untitled (Two girls), 1970s Gelatin silver print, printed c. 1970s image: 12-1/4 x 8-3/8 inches (31.1 x 21.2 cm) sheet: 20 x 16 inches PROVENANCE: Acquired directly from the artist. Born in Boston, and a veteran of the Korean War, Al Vandenberg attended art school and studied photography in New York City with Alexey Brodovitch, Richard Avedon and Bruce Davidson. During this period, Vandenberg took candid photographs of ethnic minorities living in urban deprivation in New York City. In 1964, Vandenberg moved to London to pursue a career in fashion photography and "celebrity" portraiture, collaborating on the album cover of the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. However, in the 1970s, he abandoned this commercial work altogether in favor of street portraiture, creating thousands of portraits with a more upbeat feel than his earlier work in New York. This charming portrait of two girls, is one of two works by this relatively unknown and under-appreciated photographer in this sale. HID12401132022 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
Acquired directly from the artist.
Neutral toned print on glossy, double-weight paper with broad margins. Few fine scratches across surface, margins and background above girls, visible in a raking light only. A rare find by this underrated photographer, in very good condition. Sold matted and unframed.
