Lot Details
Sir Alfred James Munnings, PRA (British, 1878-1959) Hurst Park studies (double-sided work) Pencil on paper 4-3/4 x 6-5/8 inches (12.1 x 16.8 cm) (sight) Inscribed at center: Hurst Park Property from the William A. Glaser Collection PROVENANCE: Private collection, United Kingdom; Frost & Reed, Ltd., London, acquired from the above, 1980; Private collection, United States; Sotheby's, New York, June 7, 2001, lot 549; Acquired by the present owner from the above. An undisputed master of the equine form, Sir Alfred James Munnings recorded grand movements and moments of triumph, but it was his recognition of the subtle gestures that made his paintings truly remarkable. This is especially impressive for an artist who had only one eye with which to examine his constantly moving subjects. He turned that eye frequently to the racehorse, muscular, glossy, and elegant, seen parading through the present work, a composite of sketches studying the animals before a race. In the present work, horses are shown in various attitudes; the two horses at left relaxed and at ease, while at lower right, one tucks his nose, seemingly chewing at the bit, and the striking horse at upper right walks forward boldly, with his head up and ears pricked in anticipation of the race to come. What is particularly masterful is how deftly Munnings could set down an image with summarily quick sketched lines and just a few precise, totally accurate strokes. This grouping highlights just how few marks were truly required to create a perfect equine profile. We are grateful to Lorian Peralta-Ramos for her assistance in preparing this catalogue entry.
