Lot Details
Attributed to Cornelis Pietersz Bega (Dutch, circa 1632-1664) Robed figure, kneeling Sanguine on laid paper 9 x 7-1/8 inches (22.9 x 18.1 cm) (sheet) Property from the William A. Glaser Collection PROVENANCE: Adolph Paul Oppé (1878-1957), London; Sotheby's, New York, January 8, 1991, lot 185 (as Attributed to Luca Giordano); Acquired by the present owner from the above. Scholar Michael Jaffe believed the figure to be that of a woman, possibly related to a study for a version of The Deposition from the Cross; in a letter dated June 6, 1994, Jaffe stated his belief that the work was that of Jacob Jordaens, and likely dated around 1650. However, Jordaens scholar and professor Dr. Roger-Adolf d'Hulst also examined photographs of the drawing around the same time, and through his own letter of July 15, 1994, despite acknowledging certain similarities with the figures of Jordaens, found this example lacking too many hallmarks of the artist's hand, and ultimately rejected the work as that of Jordaens. More recent scholarly review of the drawing has produced the current attribution to Cornelis Bega.
