A Russian Velikii Ustiug Cobalt Enameled Silvered Copper Alloy Tray Velikii Ustiug, late 18th Century, circa 1800 16-1/4 x 12-3/4 x 1-1/2 inches (41.3 x 32.4 x 3.8 cm) PROVENANCE: Property of a New York Family. ILLUSTRATED: Art Russe, Librairie Nationale d'Art et d'Histoire, Brussels & Paris, 1931, cat no. 369 EXHIBITED: Art Russe, Librairie Nationale d'Art et d'Histoire, Brussels & Paris, 1931, cat no. 369 This rare tray in cobalt enamel from the Velikii Ustiug workshops is highly unusual for its neoclassical form, indicating a late 18th or possibly early 19th century origin. The tray was exhibited and illustrated in 1931 in Brussels and in Paris, as part of the Art Russe Exhibition which helped popularize the collecting of Russian Works of Art in the West. Trays were common wares from the Velikii Ustiug factories, and several in typical white opaque enamel have been sold in recent years at auction. Please see a shaped rectangular tray from a Private French Collection sold Christie's London, Russian Art, July 21, 2020, lot 262, and another related tray also at Christie's on June 3, 2019, lot 340. While white wares from the factories are seen most often, cobalt enamel is less frequently seen. HID12401132022 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
