Lot Details
Christopher Killip (British, 1946) Horses on Seacoal Beach, Lynemouth, Northumberland, 1982 Gelatin silver print, printed 2008. Signed in pencil, verso. image: 9-1/2 x 12-1/2 inches (24.1 x 31.8 cm) sheet: 16 x 20 inches PROVENANCE: Acquired from the artist. LITERATURE: G. Badger, Chris Killip, London, Phaidon 55, 2001, np "This frieze of three horses drawing carts on a windy beach introduces a community and another leitmotif in Killip's work. The strange scene looks like some arcane ritual from another time -- a race, perhaps -- but the reality is much grimmer. These men (and women and children) are collecting seacoal from the beach at Lynemouth, a large colliery village some 15 miles north of Newcastle. Seacoal gathering is a harvest of waste, the recycling of residue from the dumping into the sea of uneconomical coal waste from the nearby mine by the National Coal Board." (Badger, ibid.)
