Chesley Bonestell (American, 1888-1986) Valley Of Taurus-Littrow, 1977 Oil on canvasboard 20-1/4 x 26-1/2 inches (51.4 x 67.3 cm) Signed lower right: Chesley Bonestell The Valley of Taurus-Littrow is a deep lunar valley located near the southeastern edge of the Moon's Mare Serenitatis. It was the landing site for NASA's Apollo 17 mission in 1972, where astronauts Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt explored its rugged terrain, rich in geological diversity. The valley is characterized by steep mountains, narrow ridges, and a combination of volcanic and impact-related features, making it a prime location for scientific exploration of the Moon's history. Working closely with NASA imagery and scientists, Chesley Bonestell created images like this to capture the imagination and support of the American public for space exploration.
