Lot Details
Paul Strand (American, 1890-1976) Lily Pond, South Uist, Hebrides, 1954 Gelatin silver print 5-5/8 x 5-7/8 inches (14.3 x 14.9 cm) (image/sheet) Signed, titled, and dated in ink, verso. The Collection of Sarah Warren Hoffman PROVENANCE: The artist; Michael Hoffman, first executive director of Aperture and Cofounder (with Hazel Strand) of the Paul Strand Archive; by bequest to his daughter Sarah Warren Hoffman LITERATURE: Paul Strand, Tir a'Mhurain: The Outer Hebrides of Scotland, Aperture, New York, 2005. This private collection of Paul Strand's photographs is personal in that it connects directly to my childhood memories and feelings associated with home. To me, Paul Strand was a man who made photographs that often hung on our walls or were in the form of xerox copies strewn on our living room floor when my father Michael sequenced then for a book or an exhibit. The Strands had no children themselves but my father became like a son to them. Though I have no conscious memory of Paul (he died in his home in Orgeval, France when I was 3), in 1976, Hazel [Strand] was like another grandmother to me. When she moved back to the States after Paul died, she settled in Millerton, NY, a few blocks from Aperture and helped start what would become the Paul Strand Foundation and then the Aperture Foundation run by my father until his death in 2001. (Sarah Warren Hoffman) Heritage is honored to offer several examples of Paul Strand's best work (lots 73034, 73037-73041,) from this distinguished private collection.
