Lot Details
Florence Elliott McClung (American, 1894-1992) The Blue Spruce Oil on canvasboard 20 x 16 inches (50.8 x 40.6 cm) Signed lower right: F. McClung Property from the collection of John L. Nau, III, Houston PROVENANCE: David Dike Fine Art, Dallas; Valley House Gallery Inc., Dallas; Acquired by the present owner from the above. Florence McClung began painting in the early 1920s, when she studied with Frank Reaugh, Olin Travis, Frank Klepper, and Alexandre Hogue, before training at several institutions across the country. Often following an urge to romanticize the rural landscape, McClung embraced regional subject matter. She largely pursued her own stylistic tendency toward the idealization of rural settings instead of the abstraction favored by many of her contemporaries and teachers. McClung sketched and painted around Taos, New Mexico, and studied at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center with Adolf Dehn. Her travels to and from Taos and Colorado Springs provided her with many interesting subjects for her brush and lithographic crayon.
