Yang Chihung, born in Taiwan in 1947, is one of the most influential contemporary artists of Taiwanese origin. He developed an interest in art at an early age and was inspired to pursue an artistic career after reading *Lust for Life: The Life of Vincent van Gogh*. After studying at the National Academy of Art in Taiwan, he emigrated to the United States in 1979, where he became the first Taiwanese artist to receive a grant. Influenced by Abstract Expressionism, particularly Jackson Pollock, Yang Chihung moved away from figurative representations in the 1990s and increasingly explored emotional forms of expression. His works are characterized by expressive, gestural painting and an intuitive, almost meditative technique. In addition to numerous international exhibitions, works by Yang Chihung can be found in renowned museums such as the Singapore Art Museum. He thus remains a key figure in the Asian-American art scene.
“A Trip to the Jungle” transports the viewer into an expressive, mystical jungle scene. The large-scale work is filled with depictions of exotic plants and animals and offers a glimpse into this hidden world. Lured by a magnificent pink flower, a black-and-white-patterned iguana climbs up a branch. Meanwhile, a small black bird sits on a bare tree and gazes at a deer skull with towering antlers, a symbol of transience. Vibrant reds and greens contrast with dark, earthy tones, lending the painting an almost surreal intensity. Yang Chihung’s dynamic brushwork combines elements of Western abstraction with Eastern symbolism, creating a visionary, dreamlike scene.
