Clark Hulings (American, 1922-2011) Moroccan Street, 1993 Oil on canvas 28 x 44 inches (71.1 x 111.8 cm) Signed and dated lower right: Hulings © 1993 PROVENANCE: Private collection, Los Angeles. We thank the Clark Hulings Estate for kindly providing cataloguing assistance. Clark Hulings's command of light, color, and texture earned him distinction as a modern master of Western painting. His subjects extended beyond the genre's familiar imagery of cowboys and frontier life to encompass the daily routines of rural communities throughout the Southwest, Europe, and North Africa. Whether depicting a sunlit market or a quiet village street, Hulings brought close observation and compositional sophistication to scenes of everyday life. Raised near New York City, Hulings also spent portions of his childhood in Louisiana and Spain, experiences that helped shape his enduring interest in regional cultures and landscapes. Visits to the Metropolitan Museum of Art introduced him to Realist and Impressionist painting, establishing an early foundation for his attention to natural light and the textures of ordinary surroundings. He subsequently trained at the Art Students League and worked as a freelance illustrator in New York before devoting himself to fine art. Following fifteen years in illustration, Hulings turned increasingly to subjects drawn from his extensive travels. New Mexico held particular appeal: its brilliant sunlight recalled his childhood impressions of Spain, while its agricultural communities offered subjects rooted in the rhythms of work and rural life. Farmers, vendors, and laborers became central to his practice, their activities providing both the narrative focus and the organizing structure of his compositions. Hulings made his New York gallery debut at Grand Central Art Galleries in 1965 and settled permanently in Santa Fe in 1972. The following year, he became the first recipient of the Prix de West Award at the National Academy of Western Art. His growing recognition brought numerous museum exhibitions, including a solo presentation in Oklahoma City in 1976, a retrospective at the Museum of the Southwest in Midland, Texas, in 1978, and an exhibition at the C. M. Russell Museum in Great Falls, Montana, in 1981. Painted in 1993, Moroccan Street is a monumental work that demonstrates the compositional assurance and sensitivity to light that distinguish Hulings' mature work. Jewel-toned passages, varied architectural forms, and carefully rendered displays of fruits and vegetables create a richly articulated setting for the market's daily exchanges. Figures engaged in separate activities lend the scene the apparent spontaneity of a passing moment, yet their placement establishes a measured rhythm across the composition. Light unifies this intricate arrangement, defining surfaces, opening spatial intervals, and guiding the eye through the crowded street. The painting exemplifies Hulings' achievement in the market scenes that became a signature of his work, bringing visual coherence to the complexity of communal life. "I think of my paintings as slices of life." -Clark Hulings, Art of the West Magazine, 2007 HID12401132022 © 2026 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice

Private collection, Los Angeles.

Original canvas. Under UV examination, there are two pin-point areas of inpainting above the donkey rider's head and an approximately 3.5" long line of inpaint extending horizontally along the left edge of the canvas. Some of the artist's original pigments read strongly. Varnish layer appears slightly yellowed. There are 2 approximately .5" areas of orange pigment visible; one located approximately 1.5" from the lower edge of the canvas and the other located approximately 8.5" from the right edge. Under raking light, very fine craquelure is evident throughout. In a Richard Tobey frame.
