Josephine Oliver (American, 1908-1991) Landscape, circa 1923-33 Pastel on paper 9 x 4-1/2 inches (22.9 x 11.4 cm) (sheet) Property from the Estate of Olin Travis and Josephine Oliver PROVENANCE: Valley House Gallery, Inc., Dallas; Private collection. EXHIBITED: Tyler Museum of Art, Tyler, Texas, "Earth & Sky: The Pastels of Josephine Oliver Travis," May 19-August 19, 2017. Josephine Oliver's artistic talent was acknowledged early in life. By the age of twelve, she was training under master pastel artist Frank Reaugh and quickly rose to his teaching assistant. For ten years, she would attend Reaugh's West Texas, month-long sketching trips. Art, no matter what the venue, was Oliver's passion -- she won music and dance talent competitions just as easily as fine art competitions. After returning from studying in Paris, Oliver joined the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, which at the time for a female was an impressive feat. While she would focus on her musical career after her marriage to artist Olin Travis, Oliver continued to attend Reaugh's field trips. Recently, Josephine Oliver Travis's work was exhibited at the Tyler Museum of Art with help of the Valley House Gallery and Jean and Joseph K. Oliver.
