A Russian Porcelain Cup and Saucer From the Korbievsky Service Imperial Porcelain Factory, St. Petersburg, Period of Nicholas II (1894-1917) 2-1/2 x 3-3/8 x 2-5/8 inches (6.3 x 8.6 x 6.7 cm) (cup) 5-1/2 inches (14 cm) (saucer) PROVENANCE: The Thomas Mansfield Collection of Imperial Russian Porcelain; John Atzbach Antiques, Bellevue, Washington; The Kathleen Durdin Collection of Russian Decorative Arts, Tampa, Florida. Based on an English Regency pattern by the Coalport Factory, the "Korbievsky" service was named for the French purveyor in St. Petersburg from whom the original pieces were purchased. Jerome Corbier was an importer of foreign luxury goods and supplier to the imperial court in the 1820s, and more than 1000 pieces were ordered from him before 1823. It was first used at Pavlovsk Palace, and in 1824, it was transferred to the Tsarskoe Selo and Alexander Palaces and in subsequent years considerably expanded with Imperial Porcelain Factory replacements.
