A Russian Porcelain Cup and Saucer from the Gothic Service Imperial Porcelain Factory, St. Petersburg, Period of Nicholas I (1825-1855), circa 1832-1834 2-5/8 x 3-1/2 x 2-7/8 inches (6.7 x 8.9 x 7.3 cm) (cup) 5-1/4 inches (13.3 cm) (saucer) PROVENANCE: The Thomas Mansfield Collection of Imperial Russian Porcelain; John Atzbach Antiques, Bellevue, Washington; The Kathleen Durdin Collection of Russian Decorative Arts, Tampa, Florida. The small banqueting service in the Gothic style was commissioned by Emperor Nicholas I for the dining room of the "Cottage" Palace at Peterhof. The Cottage had been designed in the Gothic revival taste by Scottish architect Adam Menelaws, and in the 1840s, a new adjoining dining room was added by the court architect Stackenschneider, and the service created "for the August Family's banqueting table".
