Sotheby's, London, November 12, 1969, lot 25 (as Battle scene, distant mountain castle); Sir Anthony Blunt, London; Philip Hewat-Jaboor, Ltd., London; Acquired by the present owner from the above, 1986.
Lined canvas. Mild frame abrasion at edges. Yellowing to the varnish layer. Finely patterned craquelure throughout, with a few scattered areas of slightly more pronounced cracking. A cluster of small losses with some lifting to the adjacent areas at horizon in upper left quadrant, approximately 18-inches inward from left edge and 14-inches down from upper edge. Some scattered small dots of discolored accretion and some of whiteish accretion. A very few scattered minor surface abrasions and repairs visible upon close inspection. Minor surface dirt and dust. Not examined out of frame due to size. Under UV: varnish fluoresces green unevenly. A rectangular area of brushy retouching in lower left corner, measuring approximately 9 x 4 inches in size, possibly addressing a repair. Brushy retouching at edges. Considerable but very finely applied retouching throughout, primarily addressing craquelure, and appearing as two campaigns, above and below the varnish layer, respectively. Framed Dimensions 57 X 84 X 2.5 Inches
