Avati paperback covers appeared on everything from potboilers to modern classics, and helped democratize literature. His masterfully painted, immediately recognizable style came to define an entire era and spawned scored of imitators. The work seen here, which appears as the cover of Signet's 1954 edition of Sanctuary and Requiem for a Nun by William Faulkner showcases his haunting skill to full effect.
