Lot Details
Mark Fox (b. 1963) HHQWTC, 2011 Oil on paper with linen tape, holy water, lumber from the World Trade Center/Freedom Tower construction site, and hat pins 33 x 17 x 12 inches (83.8 x 43.2 x 30.5 cm) (overall) From the Estate of Marlene Meyerson, Dallas PROVENANCE: Mark Moore Fine Art, Orange, California; Acquired by the present owner from the above. EXHIBITED: Mark Moore Fine Art, Orange, California, "Mark Fox: Statue," May 21-July 9, 2011. New York based artist Mark Fox, internationally recognized for his site-specific installations, creates multidimensional works wrapped in religious as well as cultural significance. HHQWTC, 2011 is a gathering of tangled words taken from religious text; Fox, who was brought up Catholic, uses scrawling text from Catholic doctrine which once held implicit meanings and upheld historically strict paradigms. He reduces them to their paper form and elegantly arranges them into a billowing abstract cloud of verses. The words, imitating the repetitive nature of rosary beads, are cut out individually and joined with archival linen tape moistened with holy water. The cloud is affixed with hat pins to a small block of wood sourced from the World Trade Center/Freedom Tower construction site. Fox, raised in a blue-collar family, utilizes relatable materials that remind him of his upbringing and the balance of the fanciful fantasy of the otherworldly conveyed in Catholicism and supported by the common man. In the wake of 9/11, like many artists, Fox was horrified by the destruction of the World Trade Center and Afghanistan's monumental Buddhas, reflecting in his art the questions ‘what do objects mean?' and ‘what does culture mean?' Fox's work effortlessly blends these two questions within this thought-provoking state of sculpture.
