The photographic artist In Sook Kim, born in 1969 in Busan, South Korea, came to Germany in 1999 to study at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, where she became a master student of Thomas Ruff. She began to make a name for herself through international exhibitions at an early stage. In her work, Kim examines the conditions of human existence in modern society with great precision and considerable conceptual rigour. Her photographs explore themes such as isolation, loss of identity and the fragile position of the individual within anonymous social structures. Her visual worlds are complex and often theatrical in nature; they oscillate between documentary objectivity and heightened dramatisation. From an art-historical perspective, Kim follows in the tradition of the Düsseldorf School of Photography, to which she adds a distinct psychological and socially critical dimension.



The work *Saturday Night* is one of her best-known pieces and marks a high point in her career. Over a period of two years, Kim created this large-format photograph, which depicts the façade of a Düsseldorf hotel with 66 windows. Behind each window unfolds a distinct, precisely composed scene: people alone or in pairs, clothed or naked, in moments of everyday life, but above all of intimacy. In this way, In Sook Kim brings home to us the depths of human existence.



Each situation is photographed individually and then assembled into a single composite image. The result is a multi-layered tableau that places the viewer in the role of a detached observer, a voyeur. Despite their physical proximity, the figures remain isolated from one another – a haunting symbol of urban loneliness. “Saturday Night” brings together the artist’s central themes and condenses them into an oppressive yet fascinating visual vision.
