The French artist Charles Matton is known as a painter and sculptor. But he has also made a name for himself as a director, writer, and illustrator. The depiction of empty, enigmatic spaces is a central theme in Matton’s artistic work. Starting in the mid-1980s, Charles Matton began creating what are known as “boxes,” which, constructed and staged like scenes from a film, transport the viewer into idiosyncratic, imaginary worlds through a multitude of individual works. Through the skillful use of mirrors, the artist creates the illusion of infinity, thus crafting seemingly endless corridors filled with books in his miniature works. His works draw on the early European tradition of handcrafted cabinet houses and the trompe-l’œil illusions found in 17th-century Dutch perspective boxes. His interiors, both real and imagined, defy contemporary categorization.
