Diango Hernández’s early series of images reflect an intense engagement with the Cuban socialist system in which he grew up. The red leaves allude to the red party membership card that the figure in the image is trying to juggle. In his effort to find his place in the world, the artist experiences himself as both confused and shaped by the political system. It seems difficult to offer a clear-cut assessment of that system, which has both shaped and distorted him. Through the medium of art, however, it is possible to express both the facets of political manipulation and the possibilities for establishing one’s own position
