During his “New Objectivity” period, which in Eberhard Viegener’s oeuvre can be dated roughly to between 1921 and 1930, he produced some of the most significant paintings of his career. The artist himself attached particular significance to these works, so that, following his experiences of confiscation and destruction during the Nazi “art purges,” he occasionally proceeded to re-execute individual compositions after 1945. The present painting belongs to this small group of new versions and refers to a version from 1924, which is now in private hands
