BUCHHOLZ, KARL1849 Schloßvippach/Weimar - 1889 Oberweimar

Title: Sketchbook, 43 Pages.
Landscape and Tree Studies in the Surroundings of Oberweimar.
Date: Before 1872.
Technique: Pencil on beige paper.
Measurement: 20 x 25.5cm.
Frame: Cloth cover.
Provenance:
Private ownership, Germany.

The present sketchbook by Karl Buchholz contains numerous preparatory studies for paintings by the artist. They show areas familiar to the artist, around Oberweimar (Thuringia), where Buchholz died in 1889.

It is difficult to date the sketches precisely, but they include one for the famous painting "Spring in the Village" from around 1872 in the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin (inv. no. A I 944), which could be a terminus ante quem for the execution of the sketches.
