Moffatt's publication, Paintbrush for Hire: The Travels of James and Emma Cameron, 1840-1900. Before leaving Chattanooga for the winter, James Cameron vowed to make a study of Lookout Mountain, documenting the expansive prospect from his family's hillside property. Although the resulting painting bears the date 1862, its abundant foliage suggests that Cameron may have first sketched the composition during the summer of 1861, at the outset of the Civil War. View from Cameron Hill presents a serene panorama of Chattanooga's verdant landscape, encompassing the broad sweep of the Tennessee River, the open fields of Moccasin Bend, and the blue-gray heights of Raccoon Mountain in the distance. Cameron frames the sunlit vista with a dense screen of trees whose interlacing branches form a dramatic pointed arch, leading the eye from the deeply shadowed foreground toward the luminous valley beyond. Morning light filters across the wooded slope, while scattered farmhouses and cultivated fields lend the scene an intimate, pastoral character. The river's glasslike surface, rendered in delicate silvery tones, reinforces the composition's prevailing sense of stillness. Painted on the eve of profound upheaval, the work preserves an idyllic vision of Chattanooga before the destruction and transformation brought by the Civil War. Wax-lined. UV examination reveals scattered restoration and inpainting throughout, particularly in the cluster of trees at left corresponding to a repaired break in the canvas, as well as retouching in the tree canopy at upper right. Moderate craquelure throughout.
