Watercolor over pencil. Signed and dated in lower right. On mold-made paper by Ingres (with the watermark). 62 x 48 cm. , the full sheet. [EH].
- Bright, warm and cheerful colors. - With the open door in the background, the seemingly ordinary motif gains in formal and intellectual complexity. - From 1933 onward, Erich Heckel faced increasing repression under the National Socialist regime. - As part of the "Degenerate Art" campaign, almost 800 of his works were confiscated from German museums, many were destroyed.
The work is registered in the Erich Heckel Estate, Hemmenhofen on lake Constance. We are grateful to Mrs Renate Ebner for her kind support in cataloging this lot.
