In 2010, Ai Weiwei first created his series of glazed blue-and-white porcelain Owl Houses for an exhibition at San Francisco's Haines Gallery. Produced using traditional Chinese methods and hand-painted in Jingdezhen—well known for its exquisite blue-and-white porcelain—the works are decorated with motifs associated with the Ming dynasty. After the exhibition, ten of the works were relocated to Presidio National Park as part of the first site-based art exhibition conceived for a national park, where they were used by Presidio Habitats to support the Western screech owl.
