Ai Weiwei (b. 1957) Colored Vases (thirteen works), 2013 Neolithic vases and industrial paint 5-3/4 x 5-3/8 x 5-3/8 ines (14.6 x 13.7 x 13.7 cm) (tallest, pink vase) Signed and dated to underside of green example: Wei Ai / 2013 PROVENANCE: Ethan Cohen Gallery, New York; Private collection, New England, acquired from the above, 2015. Ai Weiwei is a Chinese contemporary artist and activist renowned for his incisive socio-political commentary. In this work, Weiwei selects thirteen Neolithic earthenware vases and thickly coats them with vibrant industrial paints. His earliest installations featuring vividly dipped earthenware began with Han Dynasty urns. By continuing to blend these ancient materials with contemporary practices, Ai Weiwei's Colored Vases function as a provocative intervention, transforming ancient artifacts into contemporary statements on history and authorship—engaging what is "no longer visible, but still present." Each presenting very well. Small cracks, minor lifting, and imperfections to paint layer inherent to the work. A few scattered white pin points of paint to a few examples with one pink finger print to side of neon green example, likely inherent to the artist's process. Minor loss to one small paint drip to side of cream colored example. Very light dust to recesses.
