Bernardo Bellotto,
also known as “Canaletto”,
1721 Venice – 1780 Warsaw, workshop of
GRAND CANAL WITH THE DOGE’S PALACE AND THE PIAZZETTA
Oil on canvas.
110 x 150 cm.
The veduta presents a highly detailed rendering of this celebrated Venetian view, evident in the handling of light, the precision of the architectural detail and the lively treatment of the staffage figures. It should also be noted that such vedute were repeatedly produced in Canaletto’s workshop, probably under the supervision of the master himself. It was standard workshop practice to meet the numerous commissions from visitors to Venice and collectors, particularly in England, by offering not only autograph works by Canaletto but also paintings executed by members of his workshop.
The prototype for the present composition, with the Palazzo Ducale on the right, is related to a veduta formerly in the Kress Collection and now in the El Paso Museum of Art, Texas (61.5 x 108 cm; Constable/Links 1989, cat. no. 88), although the two works differ in several details. Comparable compositions are held in the Edward Speelman Collection, the Indianapolis Museum of Art (Martindale Collection), and the Princely Collections of Liechtenstein. The painting Piazza San Marco: Looking South-East formerly in the Castle Howard Collection, is held in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. Reference may also be made to the exhibition Art Master Monaco, held in Monte Carlo in October 2019.
