Lot Details
Acrylic on canvas. Signed (lower left) as well as signed, dated and titled on the reverse of the stretcher. 51 x 40 cm.
In 1960, after a thorough study of Goethe's color theories, Paul Jenkins began his "Phenomena" series: He spread highly diluted oil and acrylic paint over the canvas with an ivory knife to achieve watercolor-like effects. [KA].
- From the "Phenomena" series, which is exemplary of his pictorial language. - Along with Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollock, Paul Jenkins was part of the American Abstract Expressionist movement. - Paul Jenkins' works are part of renowned collections around the world, including the Tate, London, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Neue Pinakothek, Munich and the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris.
LITERATURE: Ketterer Kunst, Munich 112. auction, 20. Jahrhundert, Lot 596.
Martha Jackson Gallery, New York. Private collection New York (1964 acquired from the above). Private collection Baden-Württemberg (since 1986, Ketterer Kunst)
In very good condition. At the top centre along the canvas stretcher, a tiny, subtle drycrack where the layer of paint is partially raised. The condition report was compiled in daylight with the help of a UV light source and to the best of our knowledge and belief.
