Alfred Thompson Bricher (American, 1837-1908) Seascape Oil on canvas 24 x 44 inches (61.0 x 111.8 cm) Signed with monogrammed initials lower left: ATBricher PROVENANCE: James Dwyer Gill, Springfield, Massachusetts; Private collection, Springfield, Massachusetts, by 1937; Private collection, acquired from the above, circa 1955; By descent to the present owner. Born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, in 1837 and raised in Newburyport, Massachusetts, Alfred T. Bricher showed an early talent for drawing and had established a studio in Boston by the age of 21. Largely self-taught, he traveled widely in the 1860s, finding subjects in the White Mountains, Minnesota, and along the Mississippi River. By the 1870s, he had turned his attention primarily to marine painting, a pursuit that would define the rest of his career. In Seascape, Bricher balances close observation with a subtle command of atmosphere. Gradations of light soften the rocky outcropping, while waves at different stages of motion lend the scene a quiet tension. The painting's carefully observed details reflect Bricher's ongoing commitment to scientific precision. Seascape finely captures all of the qualities that made Bricher's marine paintings distinctive.
