Born in Radeberg in 1968, painter Thomas Scheibitz is one of the leading figures in contemporary German art. Since the late 1990s, he has developed a distinctive visual language that combines representational elements with abstract, constructively arranged structures. His works are featured in major international exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale, and are characterized by precisely composed interplay between space, surface, and form.
The large-format painting “Studio” from 2006 unfolds a clearly structured, stage-like spatial arrangement. Architectural elements—walls, passageways, and perspectively rendered surfaces—are assembled into a complex pictorial structure. Cool shades of gray and blue dominate the color palette, accented by contrasting sections in red, white, and black. Vertical striped structures along the lateral edges of the painting create a rhythmic density, while the central areas are kept more subdued. The surface is controlled and evenly applied, with confidently drawn lines and precisely placed areas of color.
The pictorial space is carefully composed yet remains open in its functional purpose. Elements such as walls, passageways, and room edges are assembled into a constructed structure in which spatial depth and flat sections overlap. The composition is based on clear axes and shifts, creating a dynamic interplay between depth and surface.
