Otto Modersohn is regarded as one of the defining landscape painters of German art around 1900. Following his studies at the art academies in Düsseldorf and Karlsruhe, he became a co-founder of the Worpswede artists’ colony in 1889. In engagement with the French Barbizon School, he developed there a distinctive approach to landscape painting, characterized by direct observation of nature and quiet introspection. For Modersohn, the landscape became an expression of inner emotion. Simplified forms, calm pictorial rhythms, and a subdued, harmonious palette lend his works a poetic, contemplative atmosphere. Around 1900, he received decisive inspiration from modern French painting, particularly from Paul Cézanne and Vincent van Gogh, as well as through artistic exchange with the painter Paula Modersohn-Becker, whom he married in 1901. As a result, he condensed his pictorial language into clearly structured, increasingly planar compositions, thereby bridging the naturalistic conception of landscape in the nineteenth century with modernism.

The painting, created around 1927, belongs to the artist’s mature period. The viewer’s gaze follows a narrow drainage canal whose tranquil surface reflects the dynamic sky above. On the left bank stand simple, thatched boathouses, while to the right a path lined with slender trees recedes into the distance. A small bridge connects the banks and opens the view onto the expansive landscape of the Teufelsmoor. Only upon closer inspection does one discover two figures: a man standing on the bridge and a woman in a red coat among the trees at the right edge of the composition, moving toward one another with slightly inclined postures.

The quiet moor landscape belongs to Modersohn’s central pictorial themes. In the balanced composition, the rhythmically arranged rows of trees, and the subdued coloration, nature is distilled into the calm, poetic pictorial world that characterizes his work of the 1920s.
