John Alexander (American, b. 1945) Woodpecker, 2001 Watercolor on paper 6-1/2 x 6-7/8 inches (16.5 x 17.5 cm) (sheet) Signed and titled along lower edge: Woodpecker / John Alexander Signed, titled, and inscribed on reverse of frame: John Alexander / D5641001 / Woodpecker / Sleeping PROVENANCE: Pillsbury Peters Fine Art, Dallas; Private collection, Fort Worth. John Alexander, born in Beaumont, Texas, in 1945, has built an impressive career as a painter, draftsman, and storyteller, blending a passion for natural landscapes with a sharp satirical edge. After studying art at Lamar University, he went on to complete his MFA at Southern Methodist University, after which he taught at the University of Houston and quickly became a key figure in the local art scene. By the late 1970s, Alexander moved to New York, where his art expanded in both style and subject, reflecting his observations on culture, nature, and human behavior. Today, Alexander divides his time between New York City and Amagansett, continuing to draw inspiration from both urban and natural environments. His works, which range from expressive landscapes to intricate depictions of flora and fauna, have been acquired by prestigious institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. His watercolor Woodpecker, 2001, exemplifies his keen eye for nature's beauty, capturing delicate details with a reverence that harkens back to the East Texas bayou of his youth.
