Badger, Chris Killip, London, Phaidon 55, 2001, np. Guy Fawkes Day, also known as Bonfire Night, takes places each year in the UK (also, more recently, in Canada and Australia) on November 5 to commemorate the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605 in which Guy Fawkes and fellow Catholic co-conspirators plotted to blow up the Houses of Parliament and kill King James I. The plot was discovered before it could be carried out, however, and Fawkes and company were duly arrested and executed. The day is celebrated with bonfires (on which an effigy of Fawkes is usually burned,) and fireworks. HID12401132022 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
