• Penck's “matchstick men” are a vital element of his work, often compared to prehistoric cave paintings.
• His unique visual language served as a central point of reference for graffiti artists such as Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Penck exhibited at Documenta in Kassel in 1972, 1977, 1982, and 1992 and at the Venice Biennale in 1984.
