Godfrey Frankel (American, 1912-1995) Washington D.C. and Annapolis, Maryland (5 works), 1943 Gelatin silver prints, printed later 10-1/4 x 13-1/8 inches (26.0 x 33.3 cm) and the reverse (images) 11 x 14 inches (sheets) Four signed, titled, and dated in pencil, verso. One with photographer's signature stamp, verso. Titles include: Alley Dwelling Boys, Washington D.C; Chevrolet in an Alley, Washington, D.C.; Two Women, Two Dogs, and One Child on a Porch, Washington, D.C.; Alley Dwelling Children, Washington D.C.; and Children, Annapolis, Maryland. A Cleveland native, Godfrey Frankel moved to Washington, DC in 1943 where he photographed the African-American community. The series was later published in a book, In the Alleys: Kids in the Shadow of the Capitol, in 1995. During World War II, Frankel worked for the War Relocation Authority and photographed Heart Mountain Relocation Center in Wyoming, the infamous Japanese-American internment camp. Frankel moved to New York and joined the Photo League In 1946, exhibiting work in a group exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art the same .
