Ignatovich was a journalist and then began taking photographs in 1923, establishing himself as a leader in the field of photojournalism by the end of the decade and bringing to the medium fresh perspectives and an energetic, stylistic approach. Ignatovich was largely responsible for introducing photography to the Moscow's creative elite and, in 1930, he joined the Constructivist-influenced October union of artists, whose photography section was initially led by Alexander Rodchenko. Thoughout his long career, Ignatovich meticulously constructed images that included only elements that he deemed necessary to convey meaning. His work is characterized by masterful expressions of light and shadow, as well as rigorous, geometric compositional arrangements. Ignatovitch also experimented with cinematography and filmmaking.
